The journey of Silver Spur Therapeutic Riding Center (SSTRC) began with Debra and Gary Kermott, who were inspired by the transformative power of equine therapy while boarding horses near The Shea Center, a leading PATH (Professional Association Of Therapeutic Horsemanship) International facility. The joy and progress they witnessed in riders motivated them to start SSTRC.
With a commitment to giving back to the community, the Kermotts utilized their resources to establish SSTRC, beginning with a soft opening in September 2009. Starting with just three riders, the program was fine-tuned to meet the needs of its participants.
Debra Kermott dedicated two years to becoming a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor, ensuring that SSTRC met the rigorous standards set by PATH International. The center’s certification reflects its commitment to high-quality, safe, and effective equine-assisted therapies.
SSTRC has deliberately remained small to foster close interactions between parents, riders, and volunteers, ensuring everyone involved can witness the positive changes in the riders. Riders are grouped based on similar abilities, allowing for personalized and effective sessions.
Although PATH International is traditionally focused on English riding, the Kermotts integrated their experience with Reining horses (Western riding) to enhance the therapeutic benefits. By teaching riders to use their legs for direction and emphasizing techniques that strengthen the core and leg muscles, SSTRC provides a unique and impactful therapeutic experience.
